Arrangers’ Guild – October meeting

October 19, 2017

The Arrangers’ Guild had a great meeting in October.

We had Jan Sillik, past state FFGC president, as our instructor. She covered basic information after which she made several arrangements for examples.

The students then made their arrangement and we discussed each one.

And here are the results.

A lot of learning, fun and fellowship, was enjoyed by all.

Linda Hensler.

November Yard Selection of the Month

The Garden Club at Palm Coast have selected Jim and Doreen Cathers of 17 Fleming Ct as November Yard Selection of the Month.

The Cathers are originally from Chicago and moved to Palm Coast in 2006.

Their lovely yard has several islands of colorful flowers, flowering bushes and palm trees. The center island has a large Magnolia tree, a split leaf Philodendron, pink, purple and white Mexican Petunias, 2 small Bottle Brush and pink and white Pentas.

In the side corner lot island their landscaper installed a unique large oval shape rock with a hole in the center and it is surrounded by Asparagus ferns with red berries, heart leaf pink Ice plants, purple and white Mexican Petunias, 2 Pygmy palms in pots, and a very old Phoenix Reclinata Palm.

Going up to the front walkway you are greeted by a duck family and several frog ornaments. There is a red Ixora bush (aka Jungle Flame), a large potted Rubber tree, Pink Bleeding Hearts and Bird of Paradise.  Along right side of garage you have climbing Sky Flowers and creeping Fig vines, a large Cardinal Holly, Wondering Jews, pink Christmas Cactus and many bright red Ornamental Pineapple bushes. There are several hedges throughout the yard of colorful pink flowering Loropetalum with its pink shining leaves.

In the pool area you have a pink, orange and yellow Bromeliads in a pot, Pectra Croton bushes, red, orange, pink and yellow Hybiscus trees, a peach Christmas Cactus, pink Crown of Thorns, a split leaf Philodendron, even a potted Money tree!   Potted fruit trees consist of Lemons, Limes, Blood Oranges and Papaya.  Doreen is always seen outdoors working in her gardens and she even propagates her own plants.

Blue Star Marker Dedication

November 4, 2017

On November 4 the Blue Star Memorial Marker, sponsored by District VI of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, was dedicated at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL.

Six members of The Garden Club at Palm Coast attended the beautiful ceremony. Past FFGC president Arlene Rand made it her mission to install a Blue Star Memorial Marker in all Florida National Cemeteries, and this was the last one to be dedicated. Under the leadership of Katheen Terlizzo, District VI President from 2015-2017, plans were made and funds raised. Unfortunately the marker was dedicated after Kathleen’s term due to construction delays at the new cemetery.

The Blue Star Memorial Marker Program has been in existence through the garden club movement for more than 70 years. Each Memorial Marker is dedicated to all branches of the US Armed Forces.

Plant Sale at the Farmers Market in Flagler Beach

October 20, 2017

The Garden Club at Palm Coast organized a huge plant sale at the Farmers Market. It was a bit breezy, but otherwise weather cooperated nicely.

Set up started at 7 am under the leadership of Jane and there was a good crowd of volunteers to set up the tents and tables.

The crew ready to kick off at 8am

More than 300 plants were available for sale, most of which were produced by the members of the Propagation Guild. Five tables were loaded with plants and twice as many plants had to be displayed on the ground in front of the tables.

The Arrangers Guild manned a booth where the art of flower arranging was being demonstrated by Linda and other guild members. The guild was also selling decorative flower pots.

Membership was present to promote the club and Ellen handed out promotional materials.

Right from the opening at 8am there was a nice flow of shoppers with sometimes even line ups at the cash register operated by Susan. Several customers went on a genuine shopping spree.

Expert advice was available to help the shoppers making a choice.

There was a great variety of plants to chose from: succulents, perennials, herbs, hanging baskets, cacti, mini arrangements in pumpkins, etc.

A satisfied team at closing time.

Sales results were excellent with about 70% of the available merchandise sold.

Great job done by the whole team!!!
