Garden Club Display at Palm Coast Library

FL State Symbols

The Garden Club at Palm Coast installed an educational display on Florida’s State Symbols at the Flagler County Public Library in Palm Coast for National Garden Week which will continue through the month of June. The display includes photos of 15 state symbols as well as a short description of each. Books pertaining to some of the symbols are next to the exhibit which is located on the piano.

The official state tree, the Sabal Palm, was designated in 1953. Sabal palmettos are native to the southeastern US, Cuba and the Bahamas and are extremely salt tolerant and can grow to 65 feet tall. The state flower is the orange blossom and the state wildflower is the coreopsis, which is planted extensively in Florida for highway beautification. Animal symbols include the American alligator, Florida panther, manatee, mockingbird, largemouth bass, dolphin and zebra longwing butterfly to name a few. Visit the library and learn more about the Sunshine State’s official emblems.

Field Trips Propagation Guild

The Propagation Guild has taken two field trips recently. In May a group of nine drove to Lukas Nursery in Oviedo and shopped for landscape plants and toured the butterfly house. After lunch they stopped at Beck’s Nursery in Port Orange and several bought gorgeous exotic hibiscus as well as allamanda.

On June 6, 11 members toured Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens in Williston.

Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens

This spectacular complex is composed of over 50 gardens with numerous waterfalls and koi ponds that were born in a 100 year old retired lime rock quarry.

Island and Lookout

It took the owner 25 years to design and construct the property which is planted with bamboos, gingers, bromeliads, palm islands, orchids, Amazon and water lilies, ferns and vines.

Red Bridge

The Guild had a guided tour for nearly 2 hours walking around 1.4 miles on paths winding around and in the quarry.

The surrounding property is a 54 acre conservation easement maintained by the Conservation Trust of Florida.

Unfortunately it rained  the whole time during the visit, so a return trip will be made in September.

June 2018 Yard Selection of the Month

Elsie L. Matthews of Pickering Drive has been recognized as June 2018 Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.  Ms. Matthews was born in Ocala Florida in a family of 14 children.  She worked very hard and retired from the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services then moved to Palm Coast in March of 2012.

When she purchased her home she knew it needed much landscaping in order to make it her own, therefore, developed a plan which included removing grass and relocating shrubs to other areas of the yard.  In front of the house she has stepping stones that lead to a bench to enjoy a colorful garden of Azaleas, Tiger Fern, Midnight Jasmine, red and white Geraniums, Shasta Daisies, Chrysanthemums and two beautiful Yesterday Today Tomorrow bushes that have multiple blooms of dark purple, lilac and white flowers.

Front door area has a potted Norfolk Island Pine Tree and beautiful red Geraniums.  She also has planted red and white Poinsettias that bloom at Christmas time.

There is an island along the driveway which has several varieties of beautiful Amaryllis, Angel Trumpets, Firecrackers, Mexican Heather, Hibiscus, Sweet Potato Vine, Marigolds, Zinnias, Caladium bulbs, Lantanas, Salvias, Dusty Miller and a beautiful Rose Bush.

Back yard has a vegetable garden with collard greens, tomatoes, snap peas, carrots, chives, basil, parsley, large rosemary and large thyme.  There are fruit trees of lime, temple oranges, Kumquat, lemon, figs, peaches and 2 guavas. There is also a Crepe Myrtle and Crotons.

A well thought out plan for a very colorful yard to start the warm season ahead!

May 2018 Yard Selection of the Month

Helen Hunte of  Boxwood Lane, Palm Coast has been recognized as May Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.
Ms. Hunte was born in Trinidad, moved to the US on 9/13/1970 to New York for 35 years then retired and moved to Palm Coast 12/11/2004 to take care of her aunt and has been here for 13 years.

The front yard has an island with two big beautiful bright pink Tea Roses which has many clusters of roses. There is a Sabal Palm in the middle and a back ground of small penny round shaped  Boxwood bushes.

The front door area has several potted grayish Graptopetalum plants (AKA Ghost plant) that make tiny white star like flowers with a yellow center. They reproduce themselves when their leaves fall off.  She has an edible Pimento Pepper tree and a Meringa tree.  There is also a red Rose bush which was not yet in bloom and a yellow Croton.

On either of side of the garage there are two nice Topiary bushes and along the driveway is a beautiful Trumpet Flower bush with yellow blooms turning into a pretty peach and white color.

This yard has curb appeal with its beautiful splash of spring colors along with several green Boxwood hedges throughout the yard.
