April 2022 Selection of the Month

Carlos and Lucia Sousa of Eric Drive have been recognized as April 2022 Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.

The Sousa’s are originally from Portugal. They lived in Rhode Island then retired and moved to Palm Coast 13 years ago.

The driveway has terra cotta landscape edging and red rocks with several Schefflera bushes planted on both sides. The terra cotta edging and red rocks also border the front beds as well as the center island.

The front door area is flanked by two decorative pots with rubber trees. Inside the beds on both sides are several bird of paradise, Hawaiian Ti, red crown of thorns, Phoenix roebelenii, Chinese ixora, red camelia, purple vinca, mountain snow cap, Schefflera, persimmon fruit and a tangerine tree just started from propagation.

The center island contains a loquat tree, Schefflera, and Chinese ixoras.

Along the side of the house are several 6-foot dragon fruit trees, mountain snow cap and Schefflera. The back yard has 25 different fruit trees: olive, several varieties of orange and tangerines, which have fruit on them, apple, avocado, lemon, fig, bananas, peach, plum, pear, loquat and kumquats. They have an impressive life saver cactus (Huernia zebrina)– however, it was not in bloom.

In pots complete with their own irrigation, they grow cilantro, parsley, mint, asparagus fern, pineapple, shamrock, and croton. They have a grape vine and vegetable garden with lettuce, bush beans, and cabbage. They let one cabbage go to seed so they always have some to replant.

Carlos has an impressive fertilizer chart that lists all their plants with the type of fertilizer to use, how much and what month(s) to apply them. He is quite the gardener!

The Arranger’s Guild Floral Class – March 22, 2022

The Arranger’s Guild met today at the Flagler County Extension Office for their monthly meeting and floral design class.

Linda Hensler, Director, was absent due to a family illness, therefore, Sue Bara, was our Facilitator for the class. Sue also had her For Sale table items in the back of the room for whoever needed to purchase additional supplies.

Kathleen Terlizzo, made an announcement to the class to please do not start working on your arrangement until instructed to do so by the trainer and especially for our new members who are just starting out and want to learn.

Kelley Callery, a Garden Club and Arranger’s Guild member was our instructor for the class on “How To” create a Spring design.

Today’s arrangement was to make a Spring bouquet with or without Easter eggs and/or a bird’s nest theme. The students were provided by the club with a round bowl, Easter eggs, and a bird’s nest. Students were to bring their own flowers and greens. Those who had none were provided some by all who had extra to share.

Kelley showed the class how to use a wet oasis and/or needle pin in the bowl, then how to start arranging your greens around the bottom to fill in spaces. Flowers were then added throughout.

Tip #1: When making a table arrangement, always remember not to make it too high so your guests can talk and see each other and fill in the back of your arrangement as well with your flowers and greens. However, if your arrangement will be displayed near a wall then you can make it higher, and no need to fill in the back area.

Tip #2: Only make one hole in the oasis for each flower and greens. Do not pull it out and reinsert it in the same hole.

The students all made beautiful arrangements as you can see in the photos provided.

March 2022 Selection of the Month

Aubrey Martin of Whittle Place has been recognized as March 2022 Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.

Aubrey Martin of Whittle Place – March 2022 Selection of the Month

Aubrey has lived in Palm Coast since she was 14.  Her mother would pay her to trim bushes.  The neighbors thought she did such a nice job they started paying her to do their work and it became a career.

Most of her plants are from neighbors and friends who had half-dead plants which Aubrey has brought them back to life! She propagates most of her plants in order to fill any vacant areas in her landscape.  You will also find her at the discounted plant areas at garden centers as well.

The front porch and yard have quite the diversity of plants: pink azaleas, vinca, orchids, paddle plant, desert rose (which she successfully propagated), pink and white crape myrtles, staghorn fern, yellow and pink hibiscus, large yellow lantana, dwarf bottle bush, a large pot with pink portulaca decorated with a mushroom house and a gnome, orange lilies, gardenia, caladium, citronella, Mammey and Petra crotons.  In between the plants you can find luscious rosemary, basil and oregano filling in spaces.

The front center island with a Queen palm is underplanted with dahlia, red vinca, nandina, hibiscus,  and a potted orange portulaca.

Along the side of the house are:  fiddle-leaf fig, oyster plants, coconut palm, arrowhead vine, hibiscus, passion fruit and poinsettias.  The back yard has:  plumeria, avocado, coral tree, banana trees, balsam apple (Momordica balsamina), pink pentas, a large variegated gold dust croton, star jasmine, and a bromeliad garden.  She has a propagation table where she pots new cuttings.

Heading towards the canal there is a fairy garden with a duplex double-logged bird treehouse with front step ladders with gnomes keeping watch.  Also a beautiful deep purple princess flower (Tibouchina urvilleana), canna lilies, and cucamelon (Melothria scabra), a miniature Mexican watermelon, brighten the area.

No question about it Aubrey truly has a “green thumb” and much success giving old plants new life!
